Arbe Bareis
Back to Artwork
Arbe Bareis is active as a painter and educator.  He has exhibited his work both nationally and internationally, and was recently selected by the U.S. State Department to be part of its "Art in Embassies" program.  Recently, two of his paintings traveled to the U.S. Ambassador's residence in Eritrea.  Arbe coordinates the fine and performing arts programs at Kirkwood Community College where he also teaches drawing, painting, art appreciation, and other humanities courses.  The artist studied privately in New York with Marla Korr.  He received his MA and MFA in painting at the University of Iowa where his principal professors and mentors were Sue Hettmansperger, Will Mentor, Susan Chrysler White, Tom Aprile, and Julie Berger Hochstrasser.

The work that is currently being exhibited at the gallery draws its inspiration from the traditions of Flemish still-life painting.  Subtle glazes, dramatic lighting, and compositional relationships combine in tableaux that, for all their detailed realism, are hauntingly surreal.
