Maggie Campbell
Bookbinding and letterpress printing
Artist Bio
A child of the heartland, Maggie Campbell was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1980. The metaphorical twig that was her young life, was bent by the singular choices of her parents as they pursued their own careers in the visual and performing arts, and so has grown the "tree". While growing up around etching presses, accompanying parents and grandparents to art fairs, roller-skating around flats in a theatre scene shop, living over an art gallery, and running both the theatre and the gallery of her parents, Maggie pursued her love of books and text. She studied bookbinding with artist Joan Soppe, and at the age of 14 produced her first artist's book incorporating her own poetry and etchings in a bound book of her own making.
Ms. Campbell now lives in Brooklyn and works, by day, in the entertainment industry in Manhattan. In the hours that bracket her busy day job, Maggie continues to develop her bookbinding. Integrating beautiful handmade papers and intaglio prints into her designs, she has added the use of a letterpress to introduce simple text into her journals. This is a young artist whose unique medium affords her great personal expression and satisfaction, and whose growth is mirrored in the selection of journals available at the gallery.
