Artist Bio

As a jewelry designer, Melissa Arp uses an academic background in anthropology to inform the design of her one-of-a-kind beaded necklaces and bracelets.

The artist has long been fascinated with the role that jewelry plays within culture--whether acting as a protection from harm, or as an indication of social or religious status. Using new and antique amulets, carved fetishes, and semi-precious stones from all over the world, Melissa integrates these curiously ethnic trinkets into her jewelry. The delightful results are finished pieces with a cultural identity.

The Iowa City artist's latest work combines semi-precious stones with sterling silver charms which she sculpts. Decorated with designs from American folk art, simple motifs lend a whimsy and delicacy to this artist's beautifully crafted work.
