From his home in the San Francisco Bay area, artist Michael McAreavy pursues parallel careers in fine art photography and the financial services industry. McAreavy is a native of Marion. He graduated from Marion High School and received a degree in business from the University of Northern Iowa in 1985.
For more than twenty years, McAreavy has lived and worked in California. The state has proven to be ideally located for his peripatetic travels throughout the western United States, in search of what he somewhat jokingly describes as "duplicating an Ansel Adams masterpiece." Like that legendary photographer, McAreavy has developed the patience to wait for perfect lighting conditions, the eye for framing his compositions, and the endurance to hike through even the most rugged terrain to reach his destinations. While admitting to feeling a spiritual connection to Adams' career, McAreavy creates in his own work, emotionally charged vistas which in their scope and subject are undeniably his own.
