Artist Bio

Priscilla SteeleRaised in northern New Jersey, it is Priscilla Steele's firm belief that she could never have done what she has been able to do in the midwest, anywhere on the east coast. It wasn't until she ventured west of Pittsburgh that she felt free to explore a future in the arts.

Steele completed her undergraduate studies at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York and an MFA at the University of Iowa. Her career has been characterised by a manic juggling of work amidst the studio, family, theatre, teaching, and running a gallery. It can frankly be observed that Priscilla enjoys teaching and feels most competent at work on her own pieces. These days, that work has chiefly gravitated between botanical and figurative drawings of either a larger-than-life or minute scale. Recent experiments with small figurative panels have spawned a series of collaged, non-objective works. Priscilla's hope is that the lessons of these pieces will inform her representational work. Additionally, her discovery of the potent role of scale in image and mark-making is shaping her current studio decisions, and she looks forward to a productive 2008 exploring the large and small bounds of an image's size.
