Kathy Thor
Back to Artwork
There is no artist amidst those whose works are represented by Campbell Steele who can be confused with the singular wackiness and unalloyed joy that characterizes the ceramic work of Iowa City artist, Kathy Thor.  As an undergraduate on her way to earning a BFA in drawing, Kathy took a ceramics class to satisfy some 3D requirements for her studio major.

Since that time, Thor has produced life-sized sculptures that combine animal and human features using vividly colorful glazes.  The resulting creatures are arresting statements that are (usually) humorously unsettling objects.

Kathy comes by her use of animal imagery quite naturally.  Since we have exhibited her ceramic pieces at Campbell Steele gallery, she has kept and tended a vast array of horses, goats, and rabbits (to name only a few).

The artist's work is shown throughout the region, and is included in many private collections.
